We've decided to start looking at cars, in case mine is totaled, so that we aren't scrambling at the last second. My car was basically our only car since my DH's truck, if you could call it that, is less than baby friendly. So to my point, any suggestions on dealerships? Cars?

Would like a 4 door car, not truck/suv. I am looking myself but just looking for suggestions.

Pureawesoness --- 13 years ago -

We bought a van saturday, we looked around in the smaller dealerships, mainly bc we where wanting to be able to talk them down, which u cant with a bigger dealership, those smaller ones are more willing to negotiate while the bigger ones just want yer bootay , I like our pontiac and it was great for a familiy up to 4, as soon as it became 5 that war went from "ok size" to omg open the door throw the kid out while screaming " Idk if you're wanting payments or not but there are several ok dealerships in the area, just make sure you read reviews for them first ;-)

We applied for a loan through our bank and we'll find out tomorrow how much we're approved for. I want something new or barely used, it's going to have to last as long as this one did. It's an 04, my sister got it brand new off the truck & I got it from her in 06.

The guys insurance (progressive) said that it was totaled but USAA (our insurance) has yet to make a decision. It's on the USAA lot and we'll have more time to look for a car if we just stick with USAA since they won't have a decision until Wednesday or Thursday. I work tomorrow & Weds, but we're going to try to go look tomorrow when I get off.

Brookee... we just purchased a used (it was someone's lease vehicle) 2011 Fiesta for our 3rd vehicle. I took over driving my husband's SUV because I only do shopping and traveling to and from the high school to pick up our daughter. My husband has a hotrod that stays in the garage. So we needed something reliable and gets good gas milage for comuting back and forth for him . Of course he put a sticker on the back that says.. MY OTHER CAR IS A 392 HEMI ANY QUESTIONS? hahahahah He loves that little hoopty as he calls it though,,, says it is perfect for what we needed..... Because it was pre-owned we didn't pay the top dollar for it like a new car. Had 7,000 miles on it. CarFax came back clean and with service records from Fords.

The gas milage is pretty dang good. Averaging 37-38 on the highway. That was the biggest selling point for us. Wanted something that was a road warrior and not care about miles. It is bascially the same size as a Neon.

Hope that helps

i nabbed this from the dave ramsey site.

Thinking about buying a new car?

Try this instead: Take your current car out for a drive, open the window, and repeatedly throw $100 bills out the window. Now that sounds dumb, doesn’t it? But when you buy a new car, you’re doing the same thing the moment you take it off the lot.

If you’re a millionaire, then feel free to go nuts and buy yourself a shiny, new car. But 98% of Americans simply can’t afford it. You’ll save a ton of money and heartache if you will just buy used!

So why are we making such a big deal about new cars? One word: depreciation. New cars lose 70% of their value in the first four years. When you buy used, the original owner has already eaten the cost of depreciation. You, on the other hand, get a great four-year-old car for a great deal—one well below the expensive wholesale prices of new cars.

Let’s dig just a little deeper. Say that you are thinking about financing a new car with payments of $400 a month, just a little below the average car payment. Your current car is worth around $1,500. If you take that $400 and pay yourself, instead of the dealer, you’ll have a $4,000 paid-for-with-cash car in just 10 short months.

Sell your old car and you’ll have $1,500 to bank as you continue saving $400 a month. Ten months later, you have $5,500 for a used car. Repeat this process again, and you’ll have a $10,000 car just 30 months after you started saving. How much more sense does that make than buying a new car and watching its value drop like a rock?

Used car lots are overflowing. Millions of cars come from expired leases. For-sale-by-owner magazines are easy to find. Usually, the best deals come from individuals who are eager to get rid of their cars. They have one car to sell, not hundreds of cars like a dealer, so they will be more desperate to get the car out of their yard. Also, call some of the banks in your area and ask them how they dispose of their repossessions. Repo auctions are a great way to find good deals.

Before you buy a used car, make sure you come prepared. Know the value of the car you are considering. Visit websites like KBB, Edmunds and Carmax and do your research, especially if you are working with a dealer.

Remember, unless you’re a millionaire, you can’t afford a new car because you can’t take the hit in depreciation! The new car smell just isn’t worth it.

Blah. If I could sell my car... well, I wouldn't. I'd keep it. I loved it even though I just did $1,000 in repairs.

It was totaled & I was offered $3,402 by his insurance company.

brookee --- 13 years ago -

Georgia Girl- I actually liked the Fiesta as soon I saw one driving through gate 4 one day, lol. Did you get it at a dealership? If so, which one?

We are going out tomorrow when I get off work to test drive a few. We don't have much longer with our rental car :(

brookee --- 13 years ago -

I have an appointment with James Corlew Chevrolet today :/

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

hope you took some pretty lipstick, i heard you like to look really pretty before being .... lol..-eric cartman.

brookee --- 13 years ago -

Didn't find anything.

Kind of liked the 2012 Honda Civic and 2012 Chevy Cruze. Any words of wisdom on these?

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

dont buy within 50 miles of this armpit of the world.
both sound like cheap pos with no real resale value.

Pureawesoness --- 13 years ago -

Dont buy from Gary Matthews, best advise EVER
I still dont know if you're going for new or not but you should check out the very first place on riverside on the right its a mountnear or however you spell it, that thing is AMAZING, i didnt want the payments we paid cash but if i was to buy a car where i had to do payments id go for that thing

brookee --- 13 years ago -

I liked the Ford Fiesta Sedan. Didn't care for the hatchback. DH had an appointment in Nashville plus it was raining this morning so I didn't get much accomplished. I work all day tomorrow but am off Saturday to try again.

pureawesomeness- I'm going for new.

brookee --- 13 years ago -

I found the same car for $2,000 cheaper in Nashville than Hopkinsville. I wonder if they'll match it? Lol.

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

try hudson in madisonville. they beat everyone elses price. and offer an awesome warranties. and they use the good lube when screwin you in the behind.

Pureawesoness --- 13 years ago -

Go to that Cardealership , first one on the left on riverside coming from frot campbell blvd they straight up told us and where honest upfront and willing to work with us, too bad my hubby was in a hurry to "finish car shopping" but if you're willing to do paiments id definatly check them out, like i said if i would of been willing to do payments that fully loaded mountnair (sp) would of been AMAZING price wise, car wise , everything it was awesome i just wanted something i wouldnt hve to deal with payments, which now i kinda regret.

brookee --- 13 years ago -

I'd rather do payments and get a good car with a warranty than a used one without a warranty.

USAA totaled my car today but won't have a price until Monday or Tuesday, which is okay... gives me more time :) They also said they rated the condition of everything as "good" except one thing which was "average." Where as the other guys insurance rated most of it as "poor." They are also taking into consideration $650 out of the $1000 I did in repairs between August & September. So I'm hoping the amount is closer to what I thought it should be, lol. My car was worth more than $3,000... at least to me. And I'm the one without a car so I wouldn't settle for anything less.

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

ive bought 2 new cars since 06, anytime anything went wrong with them, the warranty didnt cover them. or it would cover one thing but not the other,. whats so bad with having 1000 set to the side for car repairs, having a paid off car? afterall why buy a new car to impress the people you dont like?

brookee --- 13 years ago -

I'm getting my Ford Fiesta next week :) They didn't have what I wanted on the lot so I have to wait for it to come in. I'm excited!

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

Georgia Girl (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

brooke.. did you get your car?

muff...I like Dave Ramsey.. he always has good advice. We had not purchased anything brand new since 2002. Paid off the Xterra years ago and driving that until the wheels fall off. The only reason we have two 2011... One is a Inagural Edition 392 Challenger. Was purchased as a collector's item. It is numbered on the dash ####/1100 and never driven as a daily driver and has only gone into car shows. Car has less than 500 miles on it and most dealerships had serious markups ( Gary Matthews had one that was marked up 50k just for the asking price.. not including any extra warranties or dealership fees, gas guzzler taxes ect)We not only got it below MSRP,included in the below MSRP it was shipped to us from Nebraska in a covered trailer, extended warranty, rim and tire warranty ( one rim is 1,200 bones), paint and glass and didn't have to pay taxes on it because we were stationed here and exempt from sales taxes on new vehicles ( internet sales are included in the TN Military Tax Free thing yoohoo! ) We have been offered 125k at the last show we went to. So this car is gaining value, not depreciating. American Hard Core Muscle :)

With the Fiesta... yes it is a 2011, but it was a used car ( former lease) so didn't take it in the shorts. We got it for 6,000 below orginal MRSP. Hard core dealing got us the extended warranty thrown in :) Took 4 hours of back and forth dealing before the deal was sealed and signed. This will be another car that will be driven until the wheels fall off and then handed to one of the kids as a dependable used vehicles should we decide to. So even though both are 2011's,,, one used.. and one doesn't leave the garage which increases the long term value :)The Challenger was purchased for pleasure.

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

he he hee.. you said pleasure. cool.

Georgia Girl (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

haha muff.. i sure did. my husband is so hilarious... if the car had a female's name, I would be jealous! But seriously... it is awesome being in the "cool car club" that when we do take it out, we have people coming up to us and wanting to take pictures of it! It has no governer on it.. will go 180mph and does the quarter mile in 12.4 seconds straight stock! :)

muffcabbage --- 13 years ago -

can i touch it??

JMunderscore --- 13 years ago -

Im looking for an used cat now. Everything in Clarksville and hopkinsville is more expensive. Definitely look in Nashville and the surrounding areas

Georgia Girl (Mod) --- 13 years ago -

I would look on eBay

brookee --- 13 years ago -

All the dealers here were a-holes. We ended up calling a dealer in Paducah.

We picked up our 2012 Ford Fiesta 4dr Sedan SE last night :) He really worked with us & even put gas in the car we drove out there since he knew we were coming from Fort Campbell after having major issues with the Ford on College St. I would not suggest them to anyone; they lied to me & when I walked out after catching them they followed me into the parking lot and argued with me.

Anyways. I really suggest Jeff Bannister at the Paducah Ford-Lincoln-Mazda :)
